4 Simple Rules for UPPING your INSTAGRAM Game

4 Simple Rules for Upping Your INSTA Game

Instagram. It’s like a foreign world for many of us. Hashtags. Geotags. Follow/unfollow games. What the heck?

Let’s make this REALLY simple. I’ve used these tips over the last 3 months to grow my Instagram from 370 followers to more than 1800 followers with an engagement rate of over 15% – which is HUGE for Instagram. The average engagement on Instagram is 2%-4%. It’s crazy awesome and EASY to do. Seriously.

What should you do? Listen up!

  1. Use the RIGHT Hashtags

You hear all the time about trending hashtags – #love, #Thursday, #smile. My advice to you – DO NOT USE THEM! By the time your photo is posted, it’s already so far down the feed that almost no one sees it. And you get little to no engagement.

Choose hashtags that 1. Relate to your niche (fashion, family, food) AND 2. Relate to your ideal follower.  Stick with hashtags in the 50,000-150,000 posts range to get maximum mileage out of your posts & the most engagement.

  1. Create an incredible BIO

People probably don’t care that you’re a cat mom (unless your Insta is all about cats), a lawyer (unless your Insta is all about being a lawyer), or that your favorite dessert is apple pie (unless your Insta is all about apple pie). So give them what they want.

Creating a great bio is easy:

  • Tell them who you are
  • What you can do for them
  • Why they should listen to you
  • How they can keep in touch with you/Call to Action

Don’t forget to show your personality and always add your website to your bio! Tell them to click your link for your latest post or to sign up for a freebie. Tell people what you want them to do, and they’ll do it if you’ve given them a reason to in your fabulous new bio.

  1. Join an Instagram Mastermind Group

Find 6-8 like-minded Insta hustlers who are working to up their Insta game. Create an Insta message with everyone included and when you post, send the group a little emoji. That way, they’ll know to go like and comment on your post. Why do this? Because the more and faster engaged your audience is, the better chance you can get your post in one of the coveted TOP POSTS on your hashtags. And the better reach and engagement you have, the faster your Instagram will grow!

  1. ENGAGE with your followers

People often forget this step and wonder why their following and engagement aren’t growing. Interact with your people! Comment back when they comment on your post. Like their posts. Get to know your followers. Show your real personality, not just what you think your Insta personality should be. Be real. People can smell a fake 10 hashtags away.

It’s not rocket science. It’s SOCIAL media. Be social. And have fun!

So there you go! These tips will help you up your game AND be a serious Insta player.

Great post thanks! I will get more active on Instagram. I do find it a bit of a mystery. Do you know if there are any good plugins that make sharing on Instagram possible?

  2. Marie says:

Thanks for the great tips! 🙂 I was wondering: how did you find the other Instagrammmers for your “mastermind group”? It sounds like a cool idea!

  3. Georgiana says:

Love these ideas! I’ve been squeamish about Instagram because it automatically unfollowed a bunch of people I’d followed…AND it deleted several pictures. Today it’s working (with pictures restored and doubled) but who knows about tomorrow. Really, really want to get the hang of this!

Instagram has definitely been going through some growing pains recently. But it’s really such a great way to interact with people and get to know those that you’re following!

Great advice! I’ve been using Instagram for a few years but only start really getting into it over the last year or so. It’s one of my favourite social media places now.
