Don’t Resist

Working out is one thing.  Working out in the mornings before work?  Quite another.  Couple that with the very cold weather we’ve been experiencing?  Nuh-uh.  The older I get, the less I want to sacrifice one wink of sleep in the mornings, especially when I’m cozy under my comforter during cold weather (God bless the snooze button!).  Alas, I have found a way to reconcile my need to maximize sleep in the mornings and desire to develop a realistic exercise routine with the full-time (+) job and all of the other fabulous engagements to tend to.  By exercising at home in the mornings, I’ve found a way to save time, maximize sleep, and avoid the cold this season!  It’s a win-win-win!  And I know what you’re thinking…no, we aren’t gonna be “Sweating to the Oldies” with Richard Simmons (love the hair!) or squeeze, squeeze, SQUEEEZING our way to shapely hips and thighs with Suzanne Somers (also love the hair!).  I’m talking about fitting in a short (but sweet) resistance band training session in your bedroom or living room that will tone, strengthen, and burn some cals.

As a former competitive athlete, I’ve experienced all kinds of training methods which are fun and effective.  Variety is the spice of life when it comes to working out.  It’s so much easier to stay engaged with regular exercise by mixing it up a little bit!  My favorite fitness-related purchase in 2016 (and in the last several years, really) has been this awesome resistance band set from Black Mountain Products.   black-mountain-products-resistance-band-set-1-kit

It includes cushioned handles, a velcro ankle strap, and bands with several different resistance levels.  It’s so easy because you just slip the anchor piece through your door opening, shut it, and go to town!  The set also comes with a booklet illustrating the exercises (also shown on their website).  It includes small carry bag for travel which is great for those who are on the move but don’t want to sacrifice a workout on the travel trail!  The concept of the resistance bands is so simple which makes it fantastic.  Don’t let the slow, controlled pace of your reps fool you – this workout will kick your butt.  However, you can also tone it down to lighter level if you’re just starting back after the holiday hiatus.  That’s the beautiful thing about this exercise concept – the variety and versatility.  Bonus –resistance bands are low-impact so they don’t ravage your body like those multi-mile, pavement pounding runs.  As my dad drove me to school in the mornings and we would see the runners trudging along the Battery, he jokingly queried, “Have you ever seen a happy runner?” And to this day, I still don’t think I have!

Last but not least, the backbone of EVERY exercise routine – the playlist.  Here’s one that’s been on heavy rotation with me in the mornings and in the office!  It’s guaranteed to kick your booty into gear in the mornings and during the post-lunch sleepy slump. Enjoy!
